Brechfa Forest

Brechfa Forest in rural Mid Wales provides open access space for walkers, horse riders and cyclists. Tourism is the second largest source of employment in the villages surrounding the forest.

Deep filled pine forests. You could almost be in America's North West.

The area is now one of the pilot areas for Wales on supporting the development of a strong sustainable local economy through promoting the communities to take ownership of the area.

The Afon Gorlech switches back through the forest and you follow it along as you walk through the trees.

The Forestry Comission are using the forest for sustainable lumbar supplies. 

When in Carmarthenshire a few weeks back we took to opportunity to hike around the forest and explore the paths, rivers and varied tree species. Once a pine forest the Forestry Commission are working towards altering the area to enable the growth of broad leaf trees over the next 200 years.

The paths are well maintained and easy to follow. A map is advised but not necessary.

The paths around the forest are colour coded which make navigating the steep sided tree lined valle simple and allows you more time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. We picked to longer red route named The Forest Garden Route which is 5 miles and starts and finishes in the village of Abergorlech.

The trails are very dog friendly and due to the lack of farmland you can have your dog off the lead throughout the forest.

We picked a wet and wild day to walk around the forest but it just added to the beauty. The humid forest floor was throwing steam up into the sky throughout the walk and the pine trees and wet grass made a natural perfume from the earth.

Our Jeep Renegade was the perfect tool for navigating the narrow Welsh roads.
