Music for the road
We always have music playing when on a long journey. Whether we are heading to the hills or the coast. It’s important for us that it gets us psyched for the upcoming days or weeks ahead. The music we listen to is often something we know well. Something we can sing along to and enjoy. It’s quite often upbeat and fun. Depressing music has its time, just not now.
Here are a few examples of some great songs for the road…
The Walkmen- The Rat
Manchester Orchestra- Shake It Out
The Vines- Ride
Queens of the Stone Age- No One Knows
Other artists include:
Spoon, Jimmy Eat World, Foals, Mumford and Sons, Of Monsters and Men, Modest Mouse, The Hives, Angels and Airwaves, Pixies, Arcade Fire and Motion City Soundtrack.
Music for the coast
Anyone who has seen our recent travels is fully aware how much the UK coast means to us. One half of the team was born on the Welsh coast and we both feel a strong pull towards the ocean.
The ocean breeds life into so much we absorb, and music is a massive part of that. There are some amazing artists who have channeled their love of the ocean and waves to create some musical masterpieces.
Here are a few of our favourites…
Hollow Coves- Coastline
Xavier Rudd- Follow The Sun
Novo Amor- Anchor
Jack Johnson- Flake
Other artists include:
Current Swell, Donavon Franenreiter, Eddie Vedder, Mishka, Family and Friends, Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, Matt Costa, Jason Mraz, G. Love & Special Sauce, The Beach Boys, State Radio, Harrison Storm, and Blind Pilot.
Music for Relaxing
This is often the most important time to listen to music. After a busy day, maybe working or having fun, music can help you meditate and relax. We love to have some chilled music on when sitting by a fire, having a coffee or have it as background tunes when hanging with friends. Here some examples to get you going…
Iron & Wine- Naked As We Came
The National- I Need My Girl
Ben Howard- Old Pine
Sufjan Stevens- John Wayne Gacy, Jr.
Other artists include:
Elliot Smith, Death Cab For Cutie, The Paper Kites, Lord Huron, Vance Joy, Cat Power, Bright Eyes, Kings of Convenience, The Head and the Heart, Nick Drake, Nada Surf, Flunk and The Album Leaf.
Music for Motivation
We all need some motivation at times. If you need to finish that essay or clean the house or perhaps you need to run that extra kilometer. Music can do a great job if you pick the right song. Scientists say music with a beat of 150bpm works best, but over the years we have just found some right bangers to kick-start whatever it is we need doing...
Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Head Will Roll
Le Tigre- TKO
Metric- Gold Gun Girls
Django Django- Default
Other artists include: Crystal Castles, The Postal Service, Sleigh Bells, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., TV On The Radio, and CSS.
We have found the subject of music gets even the most timid of you talking so please let us know your favourite songs and how they inspire you to get outside! Does a certain song have strong ties to a particular place, or maybe a moment in time? We would be so stoked if you would share these with us!
We have started a Bearded Outdoors Community Playlist on Spotify. Let us know your favourite tracks that inspire you to get outside and we’ll add them to the playlist.
